I posted something similar to this post on K's blog yesterday, and I have continued to think about it ever since. I mentioned that we had an interesting reference to the "Lord of The Rings" films by our pastor this Sunday who is definitely not normally prone to modern cultural references (I did get a kick out of him saying it wasn't his generations's thing even though JRR wrote LOTR in the 40's and it started to take off with the hippies and 'Jesus People' in the 60's). I think he made the connection by way of one of the young people who told him that youth of today are not looking for "community" like many in the c-church seem to believe, but rather "fellowship." He made the distinction between community, which shares common interests and fellowship, which shares a common goal. He (our pastor) said that is the reason that the “Fellowship of the Ring” films are so popular with today’s youth. I can so relate to the need for having a cause, a goal, a purpose. It is easy to get on fire about a mission and without it, things just seem to be dead. I'm still thinking about how this applies to me personally.
